I’m a Medical Herbalist and Naturopath here in Whangarei.
But what does that mean? Who are these strange Naturopath creatures we hear about occasionally, and what do they do?
We are the holistic GPs of natural health. Naturopaths look at our patients as a whole, not just as a set of symptoms. We use all sorts of safe and natural treatments to bring their system back into balance. As my passion is Herbal Medicine, or as we used to call it 150 years ago, medicine, that is the modality I use most often.
Most of our pharmaceutical drugs today come from the herbs our ancestors used to heal themselves. Only now researchers have isolated the chemical they think is responsible for the action of interest, and they either extract it or make it synthetically. The problem with this, is that the plant has many other chemicals which may not test actively against the symptom or illness being tested, but it is there to provide a balance to the active constituent in some way, to boost or buffer it. This is why there are less acute side effects with carefully prescribed herbs than there are with pharmaceutical drugs.
